8.17 – “destroy the liberty of thy people” The word, liberty, is closely linked to the year of Jubilee in ancient Jewish tradition. This was the Nephite heritage, but the idea of the promised land as a land of liberty – a permanent Jubilee year – was also introduced early on in Nephite history. 8.20 – “I am a Nephite” This is a very unusual reply to a request for food. It is possible evidence that the Nephites were just one of many cultures living together.

8.22 – “ate … was filled … gave thanks to God” This pattern fits Jewish tradition and practice.
