3.27 – “…the cavity of a rock“ (P/L) A cave or cavity in ancient Hebrew can be a euphemism for frustration and a feeling of inability. The rock on the other hand symbolizes assurance and protection and is commonly associated with God. God is the rock of our salvation (Ps. 89:26, 95:1, 2 Nephi 9:45, Jacob 7:25, etc.). The cavity of a rock is therefore a place where you turn to God for assurance in your distress. See also Ether 13:13-14. Read more here.
3.28 – “hard words … rod” (P/L) See this note for a description of a clever wordplay involving “hard words” and the “rod” and Nephi’s brothers’ later comment that he spoke “hard things” to them (1 Nephi 16:1-4). The Hebrew word ‘dabar’ means both ‘word’ and ‘thing.’
3.29 – “…rod … ruler …” (P/L) The angel is using wordplay here. The Hebrew words are similar in sound (makel/melech). See here.
