1 Nephi 1

1.1 “having been born of goodly parents” (P/L) Nephi may be making a pun here based on the Egyptian meaning of his name (nfr – ‘good, fair’). He concludes his writings with an inclusio playing off the same word (see 2 Nephi 33:10, 14). See here for a list of examples of wordplay in the Book of Mormon. See also Helaman 5:6-7; Mormon 6:16-20.

1.4 there came many prophets The Lachish Letters are a collection of potsherd writings discovered in the 1930’s that date very tightly back to this time in Jerusalem’s history. They seem to verify the notion that prophets were speaking out about a pending destruction and that this was not well received, as Hugh Nibley argues in this 1981 Ensign article.

1.5-15 Numerous connections between Lehi’s initial prophetic vision and Nephi’s later writings are summarized here.

1.8 God sitting upon his throne, surrounded with numberless concourses of angels, in the attitude of singing and praising their God Compare Alma 35:22.

1.13 I have seen thine abominations! … Jerusalem … many should be carried away captive into Babylon. Nephi connects this aspect of his fathers initial prophetic vision in many of his later writings. See here.

1.17 …after I have abridged the record of my father then will I make an account of mine own life. (IC) Compare 1 Nephi 10:1.

1.19 “the Jews did mock him” Compare 2 Chronicles 36:15-16, describing the destruction of Jerusalem.
